College of Education Renovation Report

On May 15, 2017, the College of Education Library opens its door to library patrons with its new arrangement. The circulation desk is now strategically situated near the entrance right in front of the online user registration system, Library Usage Log. Before, the circulation desk was situated in the center of the library right after the reading area. The problem that this arrangement imposes is that students who come inside the library most of the time disregard the Library Usage Log. This results in inaccurate library statistics of library usage every day which will then reflect to the satellite library’s report on library users.

Also, students are not properly monitored in the old arrangement. Most of them bring in food and drinks which are prohibited to avoid pests and insects inhabiting the library. This problem also adds inconvenience to the library staff and the scheduled cleaners because most students leave their wrappers and water bottles anywhere in the area.  And sometimes, students are able to bring books from the library sections to the reading area in the absence of a library staff in the circulation desk which can lead to loss of library materials.

Library Usage Log dated May 2017

Because of the new arrangement of the CED Library, an improvement in the usage of the Library Usage Log is evident. The total of students coming in CED Library from May 2, 2017 to May 3, 2017 is 284 prior to the start of the library renovations. The total of students coming in CED Library from May 15, 2017 to May 16, 2017 is 318. This would mean that in a day, more than 50% of students were able to register on the Library Usage Log as compared to the old arrangement of the CED Library. In connection with this, a library staff is needed to man the circulation desk during lunch breaks on one library staff to continue the monitoring of the entrance to the library sections. This would ensure that the library will continue to be monitored and that its library materials are secured.
