THE LIBRARY SYSTEM: A Brief History

The establishment of the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology in 1969 was brought about by the result of merging of the libraries of the former MSU-Extension Division and the defunct Lanao Technical School to form the Institute Library. The library had an initial collection of about 3,000 volumes consisted of general and basic references for high school and college. There were few subscriptions of periodicals on general interest and a good number of ephemeral materials.

The Institute Library at that time operated with only two sections: college and high school. It was manned by three personnel, a librarian and two library assistants. Mrs. Consejo M. Cariaga was the head librarian assisted by Mr. Dalamacio C. Novela, who took charge of the college library while Ms. Mila S. Aliman was assigned at the High School library. Gradually, this simple structure expanded in response to the growing needs of the academic community together with an increase in personnel. Presently, there are 28 personnel composed of 11 licensed librarians and 17 support staff.

The library was housed at the second floor of the old high school building. In November 1974, five years after its operation, the library was moved to the second floor of the administration building. However, in a short span of time, since the space was inadequate to accommodate the exponential growth of the school population and library collection, the library was again transferred to the Faculty and Student Center building (now main library), occupying the 2nd and 3rd floors, in summer of 1977. To ease the space problem, unit libraries were created one at a time such as Business Administration Graduate Library, 1974 (formerly School of Development Management Library) now College of Business Administration & Accountancy Library. The College of Science and Mathematics Library (formerly Science Library) and Integrated Developmental School Library, (formerly High School Library) were organized in 1995. The Engineering & Technology Library (ETL) were established in 1999 and was renamed in 2010 as Engineering, Computing and Technology Library. In year 2000, the libraries of College of Education and College of Arts and Social Sciences were also established at the 2nd floor, CED building and ground floor, CASS building respectively. To support the research needs of the College of Nursing, the College of Nursing Library was created in April 2009. It is located at the 4th floor of the SET Bldg.

Plus, the space provided for the reading area is a lot wider than that of the old arrangement.  The On...

College of Education Renovation Report

On May 15, 2017, the College of Education Library opens its door to library patrons with its new arrangement. The circulation desk is now strategically situated near the entrance right in front of the online user registration system, Library Usage Log. Before, the circulation desk was situated in the center of the library right after the reading area. The problem that this arrangement imposes is that students who come inside the library most of the time disregard the Library Usage Log. This results in inaccurate library statistics of library usage every day which will then reflect to the satellite library’s report on library users.   CED Library Reading Area before the renovation Also, students are not properly monitored in the old arrangement. Most of them bring in food and drinks which are prohibited to avoid pests and insects inhabiting the library. This problem also adds inconvenience to the library staff and the scheduled cleaners because most students leave their ...
